Are younger generations less resilient?
Young people are not expressing their inability to cope, but rather reflecting our (the older generation's) own exhaustion. The lack of resilience in youths is also a sign of deeper rejection of a world that isn't aligned with their values.
Youths hold the suffering of their parents. They hold their exhaustion and their burnout. Young people know that the professional world they are about to enter is on the verge of collapse. A professional world filled with oppressive systems, hierarchical relationships, and archaic leadership will soon crumble. I would assume that for the young generation, mimicking the resilience of their parents might seem obsolete. Why build resilience to develop the skills necessary to feed a system that has been so harmful to the people they love, their parents, and the nature they cherish? Why pursue unfulfilling or fleeting ambitions, such as the endless consumption of disposable goods?
We established capitalism as a means to develop our nations, economically and socially. Capitalistic strategies promoting endless extraction of natural resources, economic growth, productivism and consumerism are no longer effective. Workforce worldwide are exhausting their potential while being pressured to be more productive, and performant.
I believe that young people will develop the resilience that they need to confront the issues that are most important to them: climate change, mental health, the spreading of AI in our lives and at work, women's rights, the refugee crisis, growing income inequalities etc. By supporting their growth and pointing out that this chaotic time can mark the beginning of a transition towards a better world - one that aligns with their values - we will ensure that the transfer of knowledge and professions is done in a more compassionate, suitable and adequate way.
As Reza Moghaddassi wisely wrote "The young person is a mirror that challenges us and reminds us of our vocation. He is not yet mature, but he questions us about our maturity. In this way, he challenges us through his eagerness to emerge from the contradiction between what we say and what we do, between what we want and what we live".
Young people are bravely defying a system that no longer serves our society and we should encourage them to do so.
